GIOVITA GARAVAGLIA (1790-1835)

Portrait of a Man

published 1828

Engraving | 16.6 x 11.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852073

A print after a painting formely in the collection of Antonio Scarpa (1752-1839) in Pavia, later in the Pinacoteca Scarpa at Motta di Livenza. Lettered with production details. The legend below image identifies the sitter as Antonio Tebaldeo (1463-1537). Published in F. Longhena, 'Istoria della vita e delle opere di Raffaello Sanzio', Milan 1829, p.638. The painting reproduced in this print is currently in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest (inv. no.1384) where it is attributed to Sebastiano del Piombo. The sitter remains unidentified. In Longhena's 'Istoria' the painting was described as Raphael's much celebrated portrait of Antonio Tebaldeo, an opinion which was rejected by Passavant and all scholars since. The original portrait is now regarded as lost. Suggestions have been made that a painting, described as in a private collection but whose current whereabouts are unknown, may be either the original or its copy.
