GIOVANNI OLIA (19C)

Portrait of a Cardinal

c.1800-70

Engraving | 53.7 x 38.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852122

A print after a painting currently in the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte, Naples (inv. no.145). Lettered with production details, former attribution to Raphael and identity of the sitter.

Modern scholars are divided as to the authorship of the painting, which has been generally attributed to Raphael and his workshop and dated c.1510-12. The identity of the sitter, who has been identified with a number of cardinals including Silvio Passerini and Alessandro Farnese, is also still disputed.
