AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A sonnet ("como non podde dir...")

c.1820-1875

Lithograph | 22.1 x 20.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850158

A lithographic facsimile of a sonnet written on the verso of a drawing by Raphael (c.1508-1509) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.188). Annotated on the verso.

This drawing is on the verso of a sheet depicting various studies. The heads relate to the young man standing in the left foreground of the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), painted in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican between 1508 and 1511. The angels also appear in the fresco at either side of the Holy Dove. See RCIN 852412 for a photograph of the recto.
