A self-portrait of Raphael

published 1 May 1818

Crayon manner etching | 41.0 x 32.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850006

A facsimile etching reproducing a drawing by Raphael (c.1498-1499) now in the British Museum (inv. no.1860,0616.94). This print is lettered with the attribution of the design to Raphael, title and publication details. Published in William Young Ottley's 'Italian School of Design' (1808-23). Signed by the printmaker.

This drawing is most likely a self-portrait by Raphael which has been inscribed by a later hand "Ritratto di se medessimo quando giovane", which translates as "portrait of himself when a youth". See RCIN 850007 for a photograph of a drawing by Raphael now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford which is inscribed with the same phrase.
