LUDWIG THEODOR ZOELLNER (1796-1860)
A self-portrait of Raphael?
published 1839Lithograph | 45.3 x 35.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850008
A lithograph reproducing a drawing by Raphael now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. WA1846.158). This print is lettered with the title, production details and provenance of the work. Signed by the printmaker. According to Ruland (1876), this print was published in Passavant's Atlas (pl. IV).
This is a very controversial drawing: it was traditionally considered a self-portrait of Raphael (c.1500), but Parker (see Bibliographic References) dated it c.1504 and did not identify Raphael as the sitter. The drawing is inscribed by a later hand "Ritratto di se medessimo quando giovane", which translates as "portrait of himself when a youth"; the same inscription is found on a drawing now in the British Museum (inv. no. 1860,0616.94; see RCIN 850005 for a photograph of it).
