BENOIT FARJAT (1646-1720)

A self-portrait of Raphael

c.1675-1695

Engraving | 33.3 x 22.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850057

An engraving after an unidentified drawing by Carlo Maratti which is based on the self-portrait of Raphael depicted in the fresco 'The School of Athens' painted by Raphael in c.1509-10 in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. Lettered with the title. Lettered with the name of the intermediate draughtsman.

This is the second state of the print, in which the signature of the printmaker has been erased. In the cartouche is written the inscription that features on Raphael's marble sarcophagus in the Pantheon. This is a Latin elegiac distich written by Pietro Bembo. This print was used as a frontispiece to Giovan Pietro Bellori's 'Descrizione delle immagini dipinte da Raffaello d'Urbino nelle Camere del Palazzo Apostolico Vaticano..' (Rome, 1695).
