MATTHYS POOL (1670-1732)

A portrait of Raphael

c.1720-1735

Engraving and etching | 27.2 x 19.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850041

A print depicting a portrait of Raphael within an oval, crowned by putti. Below, reproductions of the Conversion of the Proconsul and the Morbetto. This print is lettered with the title and a text in French and Dutch. Signed by the printmaker with publication details. Trimmed within the platemark.

'The Conversion of the Proconsul' (Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 13, 6-12) was executed by Raphael and his workshop for one of the ten tapestries illustrating episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Seven cartoons are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum on loan from the Royal Collection. The ten original tapestries were woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst and are currently housed in the Vatican Museums. See RCIN 853157 for photographs of 'The Conversion of the Proconsul' .

The so-called 'Morbetto' is a composition depicting an episode taken from Canto III of the Aeneid, which is known through an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (see RCIN 852188 for it) and a drawing by Raphael now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 525E; a photograph of which is at RCIN 852191).
