WILSON, CHARLES HEATH (1809-1882)

A portrait of Guidobaldo da Montefeltro

c. 1830-1876

Etching | 35.4 x 28.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850129

An etching after a portrait that was formerly ascribed to Giovanni Santi (Raphael's father) now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid (inv. no. 319), where it is attributed to Piero della Francesca. Lettered with the title.

Both the identity of the sitter and the attribution of the painting have been largely debated: traditionally believed to be a portrait of Raphael, the sitter has now been identified with Guidobaldo di Montefeltro on the basis of similarities with a medal depicting Guidobaldo by Francesco di Giorgio (dated 1483). See RCINs 850131 and 850132 for photographs of a medal depicting Guidobaldo. See Bibliographic References for further information.
