A portrait of Bindo Altoviti with the Madonna della Seggiola
published 1 Mar 1825Engraving with etching | 27.8 x 21.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850108
A print after the Portrait of Bindo Altoviti, a painting by Raphael (c.1516-18) now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (Samuel Kress Collection, inv. no.1943.4.33). Below the portrait there is a small roundel containing a depiction of the so-called 'Madonna della Seggiola’, a circular painting by Raphael (c.1514) now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. no.151). See RCIN 850973 for a photograph of the 'Madonna della Seggiola'.
Signed and dated by the printmaker with publication details and the attribution of the paintings to Raphael. Lettered with the title which identified Raphael as the sitter in the portrait. This print was published in John Corner's series of twenty-five plates under the title 'Portraits of Celebrated Painters..' (1825).
Traditionally the portrait was regarded as a self-portrait by Raphael. Its authorship has been disputed, but scholars are now almost unanimous in considering it an authentic work by Raphael. The identification of the sitter as Bindo Altoviti, a banker born in Rome in 1491 but of Florentine origin, is now universally accepted.
A print after this portrait is also included in the "Portraits by Raphael" section of the Raphael Collection; see RCIN 852054 for it.
