A portrait of Bindo Altoviti
dated 1787Engraving with etching | 40.0 x 28.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850095
A reversed print after the portrait of Bindo Altoviti, a painting by Raphael (c.1516-18) now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (Samuel Kress Collection, inv. no.1943.4.33). This print is signed and dated by the printmaker and the intermediate draughtsman. Lettered with the inscription that features on Raphael's marble sarcophagus in the Pantheon, Rome. This is a Latin elegiac distich written by Pietro Bembo and here translated into English by Alexander Pope. Trimmed within the platemark
When this print was published, the painting was regarded as a self-portrait by Raphael. Its authorship has been disputed, but scholars are now almost unanimous in considering it an authentic work by Raphael. The identification of the sitter as Bindo Altoviti, a banker born in Rome in 1491 but of Florentine origin, is now universally accepted.
The lettering below image records that the portrait was housed in the Altoviti Palace in Florence at the time this print was published. Ruland (1876) catalogued the painting as being then in the Gallery (Alte Pinakothek) in Munich.
A print after this portrait is also included in the "Portraits by Raphael" section of the Raphael Collection (see RCIN 852054 for it).
