WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

A portrait of a youth in a cap

dated 1646

Etching | 10.1 x 7.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850142

An etching reproducing in reverse a drawing of a youth now in the British Museum (inv.no.1895,0915.770) which is attributed to Benvenuto Garofalo. This print is lettered: "ex Collectione / Arundelliana"; signed and dated: "Leonardo da Vinci inv. / WHollar fecit. / 1646". This is the second state of the print. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing was etched by Wencleslaus Hollar when it was in the collection of Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, and thought to be a work by Leonardo. The sitter was previously identified as Giovanni Galeazzo, Duke of Milan. See RCIN 803682 for an impression of the first state of this etching.
