AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A portrait of a young man, once thought to be a self-portrait of Raphael

after 1860

Carbon print | 74.0 x 58.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850028

A photograph of a painting by Raphael formerly in Cracow. This portrait depicts a young man in elegant dress. Not in Ruland (1876). Annotated on the verso.

Passavant believed the portrait formerly at Cracow to depict Raphael, but various sitters have been suggested (see Bibliographic References). This painting was probably executed during the first two decades of the 16th century. Its provenance can be tracked back to Giulio Romano (who was in possession of the painting probably shortly after the death of Raphael). In 1801, the painting was bought by Prince Czartoryski and it is documented in Poland until the Second World War, when it was probably stolen.

This photograph is listed as an addition in the master copy of Ruland's catalogue (1876). Nevertheless, this is pasted on the folio sheet and the organisation of the Raphael Collection is believed to have been largely completed by 1876.
