HENRY COURTNEY SELOUS (1811-90)

A portrait of a young man

c.1830-1876

Lithograph | 31.9 x 23.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850101

A lithograph which is loosely based on the Portrait of Bindo Altoviti, a painting by Raphael (c.1516-18) now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (Samuel Kress Collection, inv. no.1943.4.33). This print is signed by the printmaker with the identification of Raphael as the painter and publication details. Lettered with the title, which identifies Raphael as the sitter. Annotated on the verso.

When this print was published, the painting was regarded as a self-portrait by Raphael. Its authorship has been disputed, but scholars are now almost unanimous in considering it an authentic work by Raphael. The identification of the sitter as Bindo Altoviti, a banker born in Rome in 1491 but of Florentine origin, is now universally accepted.

Ruland (1876) noted that the drapery in this print was borrowed from the so-called Czartoryski portrait. See RCIN 850028 for a photograph of this painting.
