GIOVANNI BRUNETTI (FL.1786-1802)

A portrait bust of Raphael

c.1780-1806

Engraving | 34.4 x 25.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850064

An engraving after a bust of Raphael sculpted by Pietro Naldini now in the Capitoline Museum, Rome (inv. no. Pro 46). This print is lettered below the image with a description in Italian and a dedication from the printmaker Giovanni Brunetti to Marco Fantuzzi. Lettered with the names of the printmaker and the intermediate draughtsman.

Ruland (1876) states that this bust was executed using a drawing by Carlo Maratti and a plaster cast of Raphael's head as models. The image of Raphael is apparently based on the portrait of a man (who was formerly thought to be Raphael) on the right of 'St Luke painting the Virgin', a painting now in the Academy of St Luke, Rome (inv. no. 283). In 1674 the bust was displayed above the tomb of Raphael in the Pantheon and it was later moved to the Capitoline Museum and replaced with a copy in situ. See RCIN 850063 for a photograph of the bust. See Bibliographic References for further information.
