RENARD, F.A. (FL.CA.1880)

The Vision of Ezekiel

c.1850-1872

Photogravure | 56.9 x 39.7 cm (platemark) | RCIN 850168

A photogravure of an engraving after 'The Vision of Ezekiel', a painting executed by Raphael (c.1518) now in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (inv.no. 174). Signed by the printmakers, with publication details. Lettered with the title and numbered "Pl. 49". Not in Ruland (1876).

The painting depicts the divine apparition of God the Father with the symbols of the Four Evangelists (the eagle representing John, the lion representing Mark, the bull symbolising Luke and the angel symbolising St Matthew). The subject has been identified as the Vision of Ezekiel (1:4-28), although Raphael uses the Biblical reference only as a "general inspiration" for his painting (see Bibliographic References).
