The vision of Ezekiel
published 1862Photogravure | 46.4 x 36.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850165
The painting depicts the divine apparition of God the Father with the symbols of the Four Evangelists (the eagle representing John, the lion representing Mark, the bull symbolising Luke and the angel symbolising St Matthew). The subject has been identified as the Vision of Ezekiel (1:4-28), although Raphael uses this textual reference only as a "general inspiration" for his painting (see Bibliographic References).
The only known preparatory drawing for this painting is now in the Horne Museum, Florence (inv. no. 5549). Its attribution has been disputed by scholars (see Bibliographic References).
