AFTER A WORK COPYING MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (CAPRESE 1475-ROME 1564)

The Fall

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 22.0 x 20.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850198

A photograph of drawing that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in possession of Mr H. Vaughan. Annotated on the verso.

Ruland (1876) believed this drawing to have been executed by Raphael after 'The Fall' (c.1510), which was frescoed by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Vatican. The depiction of the tree of knowledge of good and evil divides the fresco in two halves: 'The Fall' on the left and the 'Banishment of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden' on the right.
