LOUISE CHARLOTTE SOYER

David slaying Goliath

published 1803

Etching | 18.9 x 24.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850225

An outline etching depicting David and Goliath, probably after an engraving by Giorgio Ghisi (see RCIN 850224 for the engraving). This print is lettered with the title in French, German and English at the bottom of the print. Signed by the printmaker with the attribution of the drawing to Raphael. This print was published as plate 336 in C.P. Landon, 'Vie et Œuvre complète de Raphaël Sanzio', 1803. Annotated on the verso.

The engraving by Ghisi is relating to a painted lunette depicting 'David and Goliath' in the loggia of the Palazzo del Te, Mantua, but this print is probably based on a (now lost) drawing by Giulio Romano, rather than on the final fresco
