ELÉONOR LINGÉE (B. 1753)

The road to Calvary

published 1803

Etching | 25.3 x 20.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850537

An outline etching depicting The Road to Calvary. This print is lettered with '339' at the upper right corner, the title in French, German and English at the bottom of the print and the identification of Raphael as the painter. Signed by the printmaker. This print was published as plate 339 in C.P. Landon, Vie et Œuvre complète de Raphaël Sanzio, 1803.

For an engraving of the same subject by the Master of the Die, which could have been the source for this etching, see RCIN 850536. This print shares some elements with the so-called Spasimo di Sicilia, a painting by Raphael and his workshop (c.1515-6) now in the Prado, Madrid (inv. no. 298). See RCIN 850311 for a photograph of the painting.
