MONCORNET, BALTHASAR (1600-1668)

The Entombment of Christ

1628-1668

Engraving | 16.4 x 17.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850558

An engraving which is a copy in reverse of a print by Lucas Vostermann after a drawing depicting The Entombment of Christ. Signed and dated by the printmaker with the attribution of the drawing to Raphael. Lettered with a Latin text. Trimmed within the platemark.

See RCIN 850554 for the print by Vostermann.

According to Cordellier/Py (see Bibliographic References) the print by Vostermann reproduces a drawing by Raphael depicting The Entombment of Christ when in the Arundel collection. The composition of this drawing (now lost) is known through other drawings; among them, one in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 10165; probably reproduced in the print at RCIN 850553), one listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of Sir George Warnon but not included in the Raphael Collection, one catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Mr Grahl (see RCIN 850557 for a photograph of it) and a drawing in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 197; see RCIN 850556 for a photograph of the drawing).
