Christ feeding the Five Thousand

c.1550-1600

Etching with engraving | RCIN 850513

A print depicting Christ feeding the Five Thousands. Signed by the printmaker with the attribution of the design to Raphael. Trimmed within the platemark.

This print appears to be after a drawing attributed to Bartolomeo Ramenghi so-called Bagnacavallo now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 4283; see RCIN 850515 for a photograph of this drawing). The drawing was probably used as a modello for the fresco (which was destroyed in the late 19th century) executed by Bagnacavallo and Biagio Pupini in the refectory of S. Salvatore, Bologna. This engraving is printed in the same direction and scale of the drawing, but it shows some differences with it especially in the background. Other two drawings (one by Biagio Pupini and one by Bagnacavallo) now in the Royal Library, Windsor (respectively RCINs 990044 and 990736) are very close to two details on the right and left portion of this engraving.

  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
