AFTER PIETRO PERUGINO (CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE C. 1450-FONTIGNANO 1523)

Christ and the Woman of Samaria

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 23.6 x 37.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850512

A photograph of a drawing depicting Christ and the woman of Samaria by Pietro Perugino now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. (inv. no. WA1846.7). Annotated on the verso.

Parker (see Bibliographic References) related this drawing to a predella executed by Perugino towards the end of his career. This was a set of five pictures, one of which is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York while the other four are now in the Art Institute, Chicago (including the one depicting Christ and the woman of Samaria, inv. no. 1933.1024). The verso of this drawing is blackened for transfer by indentation. The painting which would have been placed above this predella has not yet been identified.
