MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

The Judgment of Paris

c.1515-20

Engraving | 28.8 x 43.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851707

An engraving after a lost design by Raphael showing similarities to a grisaille fresco beneath the 'Parnassus' in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Museums (c.1512-13). The date of both the original design by Raphael and the engraving is matter of dispute. Signed on plate with engraver's monogram at lower centre: MAF. A copy in the same direction by Marco da Ravenna at RCIN 851709; an anonymous copy at RCIN 851708. For a discussion on sources Raphael may have used for designing the composition, including ancient sarcophagi now at the Villa Medici and Villa Pamphili in Rome, see Shoemaker/Broun 1981 (no.43).
