JOHN SMITH (1652-1743)
Pan and the Infant Bacchus
c.1670-1732Mezzotint | 12.5 x 9.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851828
This mezzotint is a reversed copy after an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851827: after a design traditionally ascribed to Raphael, but the authorship of which is still a matter of dispute); with alterations. Ruland (1876) catalogued the print as by J. Smith.
The engraving by Raimondi, formerly interpreted as Satyr and Child, is now generally identified as Pan and the Infant Bacchus (first suggested by Davidson, and accepted by all scholars since).
