Apollo, Minerva, and the Muses

c.1510-30

Engraving | RCIN 851751

A series of 16 engravings attributed to Marcantonio Raimondi known as Apollo, Minerva, and the Muses. The engravings are generally thought to be based on designs by Raphael, inspired by an Antique sarcophagus formerly in the Palazzo Giustiniani, Rome, and now in Vienna, and by another sarcophagus with a wedding scene currently in the Basilica di San Lorenzo, Rome (see Massari in Raphael Invenit 1985, p.242). An engraving after the sarcophagus once in the Palazzo Giustiniani at RCIN 851758.
