The Virgin bathing the Christ Child with the Infant Baptist and St Anne

c.1514-1565

Etching | 35.0 x 24.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851173

A print reproducing a composition often attributed to Raphael, related to the so-called 'Madonna mit dem Becken' (Madonna del Catino), a painting by Giulio Romano (c.1525) currently housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden (inv. no.103). Only state.

A 16th-century anonymous print of the same composition (although with some differences and in reverse) can be found at RCIN 812272.

The print shows the full-length kneeling Virgin, bathing the Christ Child who turns towards the Infant Baptist who pours water over Him from a jug, with St Anne holding a cloth next to a fire at left; in an interior.
