Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Virgin and Child with St Elizabeth and the Infant Baptist

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 9.1 x 7.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851095

A photograph of a painting listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the Royal Gallery in Stockholm, most probably the one currently housed at Drottningholm Palace, Sweden (inv. no.Drh.284). The painting reproduces a composition generally attributed to Raphael, for a related drawing ascribed to the master survives in the Louvre (inv. no.3949). Several prints and paintings of this composition are known. It has been suggested that an original painting by Raphael with this composition was intended, but it may have never been executed or might have got lost. Showing the full-length seated Virgin holding the Christ Child on her lap with both arms, with the crouched St Elizabeth and the Infant Baptist presenting the Child with a bird on the left; in a landscape.
