The Virgin and Child with Holy Figures ['The Madonna del Pesce']

c.1515-1525

Engraving | RCIN 850955

An engraving reproducing the composition of the so-called ‘Madonna del Pesce’, a painting by Raphael and his workshop (c.1513-14) now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (see RCIN 850952).

A drawing attributed to Raphael now in the Scottish National Galleries, Edinburgh (inv. no.D5342) closely resembles the engraving, for which it is thought to have served as model. For a photograph of the drawing, see RCIN 850957. For a later reworked state, see RCIN 850956.

Showing the enthroned Virgin holding the Christ Child with both hands, with the Archangel Raphael presenting the young Tobias who kneels down while holding a fish on the left, and St Jerome with an open book and his lion on the right.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
