VINCENZO VANGELISTI (1744-98)

The Virgin and Child ['The Madonna with the Green Cushion']

c.1764-1788

Engraving with etching | 33.0 x 25.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851161

A print after the so-called Madonna of the Green Cushion, a painting by Andrea Solario currently housed in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.673); reproduced in reverse. The lettering indicates that the painting - then in the Palais Royal - was believed to be by Raphael. Lettered with title and production details.

This print shows the half-length Virgin breast-feeding the Christ Child, who lies on a cushion placed on a plinth; the figures are set against a landscape background.
