Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Virgin and Child

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 8.1 x 7.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850725

A photograph of a pen and ink sketch now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.726a).

Ruland (1876) attributed the drawing to Raphael and connected it with the so-called 'Tempi Madonna' (1507-08), a painting now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no.WA 796). The drawing is now thought to be a copy possibly after a lost study by Raphael. Its authorship is a matter of debate, with attributions ranging from Perino del Vaga (Sonnenburg 1983) to Cambiaso or Bandinelli (Jaffé 1994). See Bibliographic References for further discussion and RCIN 850719 for a photograph of the painting.

Showing the half-length standing Virgin cheek-to-cheek with the Christ Child, held with both hands and turned toward the viewer.
