The Preaching of St John the Baptist [‘The Ansidei Altarpiece’, predella panel]

Engraving with etching | 34.5 x 56.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850690

A reversed engraving after a painting by Raphael which at the time of the print was in the collection of Lord Robert Spencer, London, to whom the plate is dedicated. Lettered with production details. According to Ruland (1876), the painting was later in the possession of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Bowood and is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 6480). See RCIN 850689 for a photograph of the predella panel.

The painting is the only surviving scene of the predella of Raphael’s Ansidei Altarpiece (1505), the central panel of which is also in the National Gallery, London (see RCIN 850685 for a photograph of the painting).

Showing St John the Baptist on the far right, preaching to a multitude of male listeners arranged in several groups.
