CHARLES THURSTON THOMPSON (1816-68)

The Preaching of St John the Baptist

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 21.5 x 41.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850691

A photograph of a brown wash drawing heightened with gold formerly attributed to Raphael, now ascribed to Jacopo Ligozzi and housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 912748). The photographed drawing was presented to the Royal Library by the politician and art historian William Stirling (later Sir William Stirling-Maxwell) probably in the early 1860s.

The drawing corresponds in composition with a painting by Raphael (1505) now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 6480), the only surviving scene from the predella of his so-called Ansidei Altarpiece, the central panel of which is also in the London National Gallery (inv. no.NG 1171). See RCINs 850685 and 850689 respectively for photographs of the painting and the predella panel.

Showing St John the Baptist on the far right, preaching to a multitude of male listeners arranged in several groups.
