The Holy Family with the Infant Baptist
republished 1774Etching | 54.4 x 39.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851090
The composition of the painting is based on the so-called Madonna del Passeggio, a picture generally attributed to the workshop of Raphael after a design by the master (c.1518-20), currently on loan to the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no. NGL 064.46; see RCIN 851085 for a print after this painting) from the Duke of Sutherland Collection.
This print is a late reprint of an etching by Giacomo Antonio Stefanoni dated 1632. The etcher's name was originally located at lower left, and has been replaced by Carlo Losi's publishing details. An impression of this reprint without the publisher's address can be found at RCIN 851089.
Showing the full-length Virgin holding the Christ Child with her left hand and putting her right on the head of the Infant John the Baptist, who approaches them on the left holding a cross staff, with St Joseph leaning on a parapet on the left; in a landscape.
