The drawing is thought to be a study for the so-called ‘Madonna del Cardellino’, a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv.1980, no.1447). A photograph of the painting can be found at RCIN 850698.
Showing the seated figure of the Virgin holding in her right hand a book, the pages of which are being turned over by the Christ Child; with the Infant Baptist standing on the left.
