Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Studies for a Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 25.6 x 19.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850715

A photograph of a study sheet by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.723A).

Ruland (1876) connected the photographed sheet with Raphael's so-called ‘Madonna of the Meadow’ (1505-1506), a painting now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no.GG175), in preparation of which it is now commonly thought to have been executed. See RCIN 850706 for a print reproducing the painting.

This drawing features a study after Michelangelo's Tondo Doni on the verso: see RCIN 850901 for a photograph of the verso.
