Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

CHARLES SIMON PRADIER (1783-1847)

Holy Family with the Infant Baptist [‘The Madonna delle Rovine’]

c.1803-1837

Etching and engraving | 66.1 x 50.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851092

A print reproducing a composition traditionally known as 'The Madonna delle Rovine', known in several versions. According to Ruland (1876), this print was based on a version then in the possession of the Marchese Malaspina di Sannazzaro, Pavia (ex Marquis de Marialva Collection). State with some lettering.

It is commonly thought that the original version is the one now at Kingston Lacy, Dorset (inv. no.KLA.P.42), ex William Banks Collection (1786-1855). The painting is generally attributed to the workshop of Raphael (possibly Gianfrancesco Penni), dating c.1517-18. For a photograph of the painting, see RCIN 851093.

Showing the full-length Virgin supporting the Christ Child sitting on an architectural fragment by means of a ribbon tied around His waist, with the Infant Baptist kneeling down on the left and St Joseph holding a candle inside a building in the left middle-ground; in a landscape.
