Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER GIULIO ROMANO (ROME C. 1499-MANTUA 1546)

Holy Family with the Infant Baptist

c.1853-76

Salted paper print | 23.8 x 17.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851107

A photograph of a painting which, according to Ruland (1876), was then in the possession of the late Mr Munro of Novar, London. This painting was bought in 1980 by the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no. 2398), where it is catalogued as by Giulio Romano (c. 1518-23).

The composition is based on the so-called Madonna della Rosa, a painting now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no.302) generally attributed to Raphael and his workshop (c.1517-18). For a photograph of the Madonna della Rosa, see RCIN 851103.

Showing the seated Virgin supporting the Christ Child with both hands, who stands on one foot on a cushion, with the Infant Baptist standing on the left and presenting the Child with an inscribed scroll and St Joseph coming out of a building holding a torch and the bridle of a donkey in the left background; in a landscape.
