Holy Family with the Basin ['Madonna del Catino']
c.1555-1609Etching retouched with burin | 29.8 x 26.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851171
A reversed print after the so-called 'Madonna mit dem Becken' (Madonna del Catino), a painting by Giulio Romano (c.1525) currently housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden (inv. no. 103). The lettering at lower left ascribes the painting to Raphael, to whom the picture has in fact long been attributed. This is the third state retouched with the burin, and with publisher's address.
The print shows the three-quarter length Virgin bathing the Christ Child who turns His head towards the Infant Baptist who pours water over Him from a jug, with St Anne holding a cloth at left and St Joseph in the background at right; in an interior.
