The Plague [The Morbetto]

c.1530-52

Engraving | 20.2 x 25.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852190

This engraving is a copy (in the same direction) after the so-called Morbetto, a print by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael's invention. Lettered with Latin verses at top left and lower centre (Aeneid, Canto III, verse 140f.). Lettered with attribution of the design to Raphael on a stone at right: INV[ENIT] RAP[HAEL] VR[BINAS]. Marcantonio's monogram has been substituted by that of Cornelius Matsys (see Nagler, II, no.432). Not in Ruland (1876). A second state impression of Marcantionio's engraving can be found at RCIN 852188.
