The Plague [The Morbetto]

This engraving is a copy (in the same direction) after the so-called 'Morbetto', a print by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael's invention. Lettered with Latin verses at top left and lower centre (Aeneid, Canto III, verse 140f.). Lettered with attribution of the design to Raphael on a stone at right: INV[ENIT] RAP[HAEL] VR[BINAS]. Marcantonio's monogram has been substituted by that of Cornelius Matsys (see Nagler, II, no.432). Not in Ruland (1876).
