Omen of the Greatness of Augustus

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852216

A photograph of a drawing by Giulio Romano (c.1536) currently in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990308). The drawing is a study for the right half of a now lost panel executed by Giulio Romano's workshop for the Camerino dei Cesari of the Palazzo Ducale, Mantua. This drawing is squared up for transfer to a cartoon.

This room was decorated by Giulio's workshop and completed by May 1537; it was later broken up when King Charles I acquired the Gonzaga collection in 1627. The pictorial programme of the room included eleven portraits of Roman emperors (which were commissioned from Titian), a setting of stucco frames and narrative panels executed by Giulio and the ceiling depicting the celestial forces (an example of which is the depiction of 'Diana'; see also RCIN 990304).

A study the for the left-hand portion of the painting is now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.221; photograph at RCIN 852215). The whole composition was engraved on a smaller scale by Giulio Bonasone (see RCIN 852217).
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collectin (c.1853-76)
