AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Lucretia committing suicide

c.1853-76

Salted paper print | 23.4 x 17.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852187

A photograph of a drawing attributed to Raphael, catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of William Russell (1800-1884). The drawing was later supposed to be lost, but it was published by Julien Stock in 1984 (Burlington Magazine, July 1984) as in the possession of a North American collector. Even before its reappearance, the drawing was thought to be the original by Raphael upon which Marcantonio's engraving of 'Lucretia' was based (an impression can be found at RCIN 852184). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
