MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

Lucretia

c.1511-12

Engraving | 20.4 x 13.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852184

An engraving after a (supposedly lost) drawing by Raphael. Only state. Lettered with inscription in Greek. Stamped with Peter Lely's collector's mark at lower left (Lugt 2092).

Ruland (1876) catalogued a drawing then in William Russell's collection as Raphael's original study for Marcantonio's engraving. The drawing was later supposed to be lost, but it was published by Julien Stock in 1984 (Burlington Magazine, July 1984) as in the possession of a North American collector. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
