AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Group of figures in a variety of postures (above); Child lying on the ground (below)

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 16.2 x 11.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852194

A photograph of a drawing now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1348F).

The drawing, which is attributed to an anonymous Tuscan artist from the second half of the 16th century, copies the group of figures on the right of the so-called 'Morbetto', a composition engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael's invention (RCIN 842188). It has been suggested that the drawing may be ascribed to Pomarancio (Matthias Winner). The child lying on the ground is copied from 'The Massacre of the Innocents', another engraving by Raimondi after Raphael's designs (RCIN 850413). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

A facsimile of the drawing published in Mulinari's 'Disegni originali d'eccellenti pittori esistenti nella Real Galleria di Firenze...' (1774) can be found at RCIN 852195.

Another photograph of this drawing is included in the 'New Testament Subjects' section of the Raphael Collection: see RCIN 850428 for it.
