Alexander the Great and Timoclea (?)

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852197

A photograph of a drawing currently in Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick (inv. no.1956.25.209), formerly in the Poynter Collection. Another drawing of this subject is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. Pl 367). Both these sheets are reputed copies after a lost original by Raphael, which has been sometimes identified with a study in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (inv. no.383). Photographs of these drawings can be found at RCINs 852196, 852198. The subject, which has been often interpreted as Timoclea brought before Alexander the Great, is an ongoing matter of debate. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
