Photograph of a group of Zouave and French soldiers gathered together on rocky ground. Three sit in the centre with one standing to the left facing right and another standing to the right with his right leg resting on a rock. Those seated are wearing the traditional Zouave uniform of loose trousers and open jackets and the others wear long military coats. Several are smoking pipes. Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. It was the first time that they had fought outside of North Africa.
