Zouaves and soldiers of the line

Those seated are wearing the traditional Zouave uniform of loose trousers and open jackets and the others wear long military coats. Several are smoking pipes. Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. It was the first time that they had fought outside of North Africa.
