Photograph of a Zouave soldier and an officer of the Saphis on the steps in front of a building. The Zouave sits on the steps to the left with his legs crossed and his right arm resting on his leg. The Saphis officer stands to the right leaning against a wall and holding a stick in his right hand. Both are wearing the traditional costumes of their regiment. Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. It was the first time that they had fought outside of North Africa. Saphis were Ottoman army cavalry troops.
