Photograph of Mr Simpson reclining on a rock facing right with his legs crossed and his head slightly bowed. He is holding a pair of binoculars in his right hand and there is a hat on the rock beside him. Part of a tent can be seen to the right and figures can just be seen behind him.
Mr Simpson was an artist who painted watercolours of the major events of the Crimean War, which were also sold commercially as lithographs. He later painted scenes from the Franco-Prussian War and the Afghan War.
