Mar 1855

Albumen print | 27.1 x 35.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2500499

Photograph of the town of Balaklava. In the foreground to the right there is a building with three men gathered outside the veranda. There is a pony standing in front of the building and a soldier of the 71st Regiment is leading another pony up the nearby track. Behind, on lower ground, are the rooftops of the town. Among them to the left is the harbour where several ships are anchored. There is a steep hill behind the town. The British used the town of Balaklava as a base during the Crimean War. They received their supplies through the small port and transported them by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
