ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

The French Redoubt at Inkerman

1855

Albumen print | 17.1 x 25.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2500481

Photograph of the French redoubt at Inkerman. A stone wall curves around to the left, with several soldiers standing guard on ledges within it. A big group of soldiers, probably Zouaves, sit on the ground. Many are turning to look at the camera and several are holding rifles. There are hills in the distance. Redoubts are small enclosed forts, usually outside of the main line of defence. Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. It was the first time that they had fought outside of North Africa.
