Sevastopol from the Redan

Logs, cannonballs and other debris litter the ground. Sevastopol and its harbour can be seen behind, the Russian military barracks at the forefront. The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
