Sevastopol from the Redan
1855-1856Salted paper print | 23.4 x 30.4 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500705
Photograph of Sevastopol taken from the Redan. In the foreground is the edge of the Redan redoubt, the small wall to the right reinforced with wicker fencing. Logs, cannonballs and other debris litter the ground. Sevastopol and its harbour can be seen behind, the Russian military barracks at the forefront.
The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
